about

Randomatones are portable ambient music generators that I started building in 2020. The idea was to record and video them in obscure locations with interesting acoustics. The first videos used static or spinning versions, where in each case the Randomatones were fixed to or suspended from a structure. The videos appear in my youtube channel youtube.com/@Randomatones.

The tracks on this album are recordings of the sounds the machines produced on the first 12 of these location videos. Most of the time I had programmed the units to start playing automatically after a few minutes and then run for five or six minutes before turning themselves off. While for the video soundtracks I tended to use only part of the recorded audio, this album features the full playing time. At each location I tried to record the ambient sound, with varying success, trying various techniques, but usually too occupied with getting vaguely decent video to worry about the sound. I tended to get a lot of traffic noise from the static units, or a lot of motor noise from the spinning ones. So for the most part I used very little ambient audio on this album, except where it worked out well, Snaresbrook and Woolwich being probably the two best examples.

The tracks appear in the order of the videos. My intention was to make small adjustments to the musical aspect before each outing, so that broadly you could say the performance evolved over the series. What you really here are occasional step changes, followed by a few cases that continue the theme, perhaps in a different key or mode.
